What is a Kneeling Chair?

A Kneeling Chair is a great alternative if you’re finding yourself uncomfortable in the chair you currently spend your time in. It’s a versatile piece of furniture that is great for almost all body types. It’s especially good if you’re trying to improve your posture, or looking to rid yourself of unwanted tension and have a healthy, happy spine.

Let’s break it down, shall we?

  • Kneeling chairs challenge everything we ever thought we knew about healthy sitting and good posture… exciting isn’t it?!

  • Kneeling chairs are meant to place you in a position with your thighs dropped to an angle of about 60° to 70° from vertical (as opposed to 90° when sitting in a normal chair).

  • Kneeling chairs take the weight out of your lower back by distributing more of your weight forward and allowing you to be supported by your shins.

  • Kneeling chairs are designed to help you with your core strength. It keeps you engaged throughout the day by placing you in an upright position.

  • A kneeling chairs main purpose is to help you with your posture. It does this by putting your knees and hips into a perfect S shape (or a lightning bolt shape if you’re feeling that vibe) that feels natural. We get this from the tilted seat that shifts you forward moving your weight into your legs and buttocks as opposed to just your buttocks.

  • A Kneeling chair is an incredible way to engage more of your body so you stay focused longer. Basically, the kneeling chair facilitates bodily teamwork... when you use more of your body while sitting you won’t wear out so fast.

  • All of this happens without people stealing your chair and throwing it around the room….we’re looking at you exercise ball.

  • A Kneeling chair helps you avoid that concave C shape in your back that happens after an extended period of sitting at a desk that is detrimental to the health of your lower back in the long run and it also prevents you from slouching.

There is one major thing to keep in mind if you’re thinking about investing in a kneeling chair: A kneeling chair is not the right option for you if you have any sort of knee tenderness or injury. Your legs and knees take a lot more of an active role in your sitting when you’re using a kneeling chair so if you need to stay off your knee make sure you consult a doctor before using a kneeling chair.

Another thing to keep in mind when shopping for a kneeling chair is that there are several different options of models, and each of them offers something different! If you’re curious or unsure of which one is the right chair for you we’ve made a handy-dandy quiz to help you narrow down your selection! We’ve also got plenty of information throughout our website that breaks down each chair and its many features.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s continue with the basics...
